What's Up

I've been really busy this last week. I've begun the process of leaving my job by giving informal notice. I have a pretty good relationship with my boss, so we're working out something so I can help replace myself and leave in a graceful fashion.  It's been almost a decade in the same field, and time for a change. Life is short, and events in Japan only reminded me of that. I do feel a lot of concern and nervousness about leaving a stable job, since I'm the main earner for my family, but our position is decent right now and I think I can replace much of my income fairly soon after leaving.  There's a great weight off my mind now that I've made my decision.

I'm going to NYC in a couple weeks. I'm looking forward to hanging out with my old friend and ex-roommate who is super cool and funny -- I always see him when I go up there -- and maybe meeting up with some new friends too! I'm leaving my youngest son behind with my mom, since he's a very runny toddler, and bringing my oldest.  The last time we stayed up there we were in an very cheap, noisy hotel, but this time I found a neat one bedroom vacation sublet, which should make the trip a much more pleasant experience.

I also started on an awesome project which I might have more to report on soon. I'm really excited about it!

I read an interesting take on Torchwood this morning called "Torchwood and Nostalgia"; I ran across it via Twitter. I always enjoy reading thoughtful reactions by people who are new to it. I agree heartily with the judgment at the end: Torchwood = good writing. I've always disagreed with the frequent fandom saying that Torchwood is good because it's bad. I think it's just plain good, and I can back that up, not "objectively" of course, but with qualified comparisons. I don't quite understand why shows that are considered bad by their fans often have the biggest fandoms (I'd rather stick a fork in my nose than watch Merlin, for example) but Torchwood, at least for me, represents the happy overlap of goodness and bigness (of fandom).

I have been failing horrendously at a couple of fandom goals -- rewatch and Doctor/Jack bingo -- because I've been so busy with other stuff, so I might need to cut out one or both so I'm not blaming myself for not achieving an unrealistic goal. I'm committed to Remix, even though it won't be easy. We'll see.

Hope everyone is doing great!
