I love all this Torchwood stuff coming at me. Radio plays! Web series! John Barrowman calling Miracle Day "FUCKING AWESOME!" It gives me a wonderful smile every time I log onto LJ.

Personal life has been more or less OK. I have only a month left now until my job of ten years ends.  I don't understand why my body picked this last couple of months to fall apart in various stupid, small ways, but I suppose it's good it's happening now, before my health insurance ends. The last problem to crop up is something called dyshydrotic eczema AKA vesicular palmoplantar dermatitis, and it's naaaasty, so I won't go into details.

I'd like to encourage everyone to check out [livejournal.com profile] bodlon's campaign for raising money for top surgery. I met him at Gallifrey, and he's a super nice guy with a great sense of humor, not to mention a fantastic writer. This sounds like a great opportunity for him and I really hope he meets his goal as soon as possible!

Speaking of conventions, Dragon*Con is coming up in September. I'll be there, of course, since I happen to live in this great big sweltering smoghole of a city. Like last year, I won't be around all the time, or every day, but I'll take my kids to the parade and try to make as many DW and TW panels as possible.

However, this year one thing is really weighing on my mind... HB 87, the awful, awful even-worse-than-Arizona racist anti-immigrant bill that passed a few months ago. It's very likely HB 87 will be overturned for being unconstitutional. The ACLU is one of many groups going after it. Many (but not all) Georgia immigrant rights groups are supporting a mass boycott of Georgia. It's a complicated issue and my opinion isn't 100% on the side of the boycott. But I want to make people who are going to Dragon*Con as aware of HB 87 as possible, that is, if it hasn't been overturned by September. To this end I'm thinking of starting an LJ comm or Tumblr or something, if someone hasn't done that already.

On to writing. It's been going great this week. [livejournal.com profile] heddychaa and I wrapped up Chapter 15 yesterday. I thought I couldn't write the very end of the scene, because it was too gruesome, but when [livejournal.com profile] heddychaa was busy whipping some students into shape I sucked it up and wrote the end, she gruesomed it up a bit later, and we both agree it's an awesome, epic chapter.  The next one is going to be hard to choreograph! We're about three-quarters of the way done with the novel. Ooh, maybe I can even promote it at Dragon*Con. All I need is a ridiculous sexy costume and a stack of postcards, hmm.

On a more serious note, we're getting into some deep topics in these chapters: ethnicity, and identity, and history, and the lasting effects of ancient atrocities on modern psyches. I'll also say that it's hard to pinpoint whether this is an interracial romance or not, as Sean (one of our two leads) is definitely Latino but only tentatively white... but there's a lot of complexity to the interethnic nature of the relationship between Sean and Cormac. A lot going on under the surface, in a very subtle way. It's the kind of stuff that adds to the power of the relationship.

So I'm very happy about the way writing is going. I might not be writing a lot of fanfic until we get this sucker wrapped up, but once Miracle Day starts airing, hoo boy. It's gonna rock so hard.

Fucking hell, some of the people on this thread are thicker than a whale omelet. The original person I corrected got the point fairly quickly: I'm not talking about them.

This is not the first time I've been called "the REAL racist" just for defending my right to call myself an Asian-American. So I'm not particularly shocked.

It's too bad, because the post and discussion could have become a good resource for how to handle racial color descriptors both on an overarching and character-POV level. Instead it hijacked by defensiveness, thick-headedness and whining. I'll try and post something positive as a summary resource next week, maybe, because there were a few good links before it all fell apart.
