Historical Fiction: Pleading My Case
Jun. 25th, 2010 03:04 pmI've become addicted to the brilliant blog, How to Write Badly Well. I loved his series on science fiction, and now he's doing one on historical fiction. I'm trying to finish one piece of historical fanfiction and trying to get started on another much longer one, the Big Bang piece, so let's see how Badly I am Writing. I suggest reading all the short samples I linked to because they're absolutely hilarious and form a complete story when linked together.
HISTORICAL FICTION WEEK #1: Include passing references to major historical events
Guilty as charged.
HISTORICAL FICTION WEEK #2: Allow your characters to be centuries ahead of their time
Nolo Contendere. Extenuating circumstances: time travel.
HISTORICAL FICTION WEEK #3: Cater for cameos
Guilty as a motherfucker. What's the point of writing this stuff if Jack doesn't get to flirt with famous historical figures? No Hobbes though.
HISTORICAL FICTION WEEK #4: Don’t get bogged down in research
Innocent for a change.
HISTORICAL FICTION WEEK #5: Change the past
Nolo Contendere. Extenuating circumstances: time travel.
