I didn't like this one that much, although if it's like the first two-parter, I'm hopeful that the second one will be much better than the first.
Cons:
- An acid mine in the middle of a castle is inherently fucking ridiculous. Yet nobody seemed to acknowledge that. I felt like its potential was therefore wasted. I would have enjoyed the premise more if there was a big dramatic over-the-top acid accident instead of a bunch of repetitive "oh no it's an acid puddle in a corridor" moments.
- Way too much running through corridors. It began to feel like padding. We could have been spending that time getting to know characters, or understanding the moral issues.
- The ending moment wasn't suspenseful at all. I was expecting it from the very beginning, when the Doctor touched the Flesh pool.
- I didn't care that much about the miners. I began to care about Jennifer near the end, but it took a while. This would have been a great episode to get into class issues -- the social position of miners in this future society, the existence of a slave class -- but no, Moffat doesn't really go there.
Pros:
- I'm actually interested in Rory this episode. Does he have a special plastic empathy? Who knows? I hope so.
- Non-two-dimensional villains. I don't understand the motivations of the gangers yet, beyond staying alive, of course, and they seem somewhat inconsistent, but I like the fact that there's mystery involved.
I wish Gaiman could write more episodes :-(
